BCCI Decision on Mustafizur Rahman IPL Exit Taken at Senior Level Without Wider Consultation

Date:

The decision to remove Bangladesh fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League 2026 was reportedly taken by senior officials at the highest level of the Board of Control for Cricket in India without a formal meeting or consultation with all BCCI members or the IPL Governing Council. The directive resulted in Kolkata Knight Riders releasing the left-arm pacer from their squad, despite securing him for INR 9.20 crore during the IPL 2026 mini auction held in Abu Dhabi.

According to media reports, the BCCI did not convene a full board discussion before instructing KKR to release the 30-year-old cricketer. Several officials were said to have learned about the decision only through media coverage, indicating that the move was executed without collective deliberation. The franchise has been permitted to name a replacement player for the upcoming season.

The development came amid rising political and social tensions following reports of violence in Bangladesh, which triggered strong public reactions in India. As criticism mounted against KKR and its co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, the BCCI stepped in and issued a formal order for Rahman’s removal. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia later confirmed the decision, citing prevailing circumstances as the reason behind the directive.

KKR had previously engaged in an intense bidding battle with Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals to secure Mustafizur Rahman, highlighting his demand and value in the league. However, the controversy surrounding his participation overshadowed cricketing considerations.

The fallout extended beyond the IPL. The Bangladesh Cricket Board reportedly approached the International Cricket Council requesting that upcoming T20 World Cup matches be moved out of India. Additionally, the Bangladesh government announced an indefinite suspension of IPL broadcasts within the country, escalating the diplomatic and sporting standoff.

Bangladesh’s interim advisor for Youth and Sports publicly condemned the situation, stating that the country would not tolerate any perceived disrespect towards its cricketers. Meanwhile, India’s scheduled white-ball tour of Bangladesh in September 2026 now faces uncertainty, pending further government clearance and diplomatic developments.
