Cannes Film Festival 2026 Lineup Revealed: Léa Seydoux and Catherine Deneuve Shine in Multiple Competition Films

The official selection for the 2026 Cannes Film Festival has been announced, bringing with it an exciting mix of global cinema and star-studded appearances. This year’s lineup highlights a rare moment where two iconic French actresses Léa Seydoux and Catherine Deneuve will feature in more than one major film within the prestigious competition category.

The announcement was made in Paris by festival artistic director Thierry Frémaux alongside president Iris Knobloch, unveiling not only the main competition but also sections like Un Certain Regard and other curated programs for the 79th edition of the world-renowned film festival.

Catherine Deneuve is set to appear in Parallel Tales, directed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi. This marks Farhadi’s return to feature filmmaking after A Hero. The film boasts a powerful ensemble cast including Isabelle Huppert Virginie Efira Vincent Cassel and Pierre Niney, and will compete for top honors at the festival.

Both Deneuve and Seydoux also star in Gentle Monster, directed by Marie Kreutzer. The film explores the complex lives of two women navigating personal sacrifices and responsibilities. Seydoux portrays a talented pianist who steps away from her career to support her husband and family, while Jella Haase plays a dedicated investigator balancing her demanding job with caring for her ailing father. The film dives into themes of trust relationships and emotional conflict.

In addition to this, Léa Seydoux takes on a leading role in The Unknown, directed by Arthur Harari and co-written with Justine Triet. The film presents a unique and thought-provoking storyline about identity and transformation following an unexpected encounter. The project has already attracted major attention, with distribution rights secured for North America ahead of its Cannes screening.

Beyond the competition lineup, Cannes 2026 will also celebrate cinematic legends. Renowned filmmaker Peter Jackson will receive an honorary Palme d’Or recognizing his outstanding contribution to global cinema. Similarly Barbra Streisand will also be honored for her achievements across film music and directing.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to take place from May 12 to May 23 2026, promising a showcase of artistic excellence compelling storytelling and unforgettable red carpet moments.
