Evan Rachel Wood Reveals She Won’t Return for Practical Magic Sequel and Explains Why

Date:

Evan Rachel Wood has confirmed that she will not be appearing in Practical Magic 2, clarifying to her followers that the decision was not hers to make. The actress, who originally played Kylie Owens — the daughter of Sandra Bullock’s character in the 1998 cult classic — shared on her Instagram Stories that she was not invited to reprise her role and that the character is being recast instead.

Wood expressed her disappointment by telling fans she even offered to appear in just a single scene or say one line but was informed that the production team would be recasting her role. She said she would have loved to join the returning cast, which includes Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Dianne Wiest, and Stockard Channing.

In the beloved original film, Bullock and Kidman starred as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens, who are raised by their eccentric witch aunts after losing their parents. The sisters grow up learning witchcraft, but tragedy strikes when Gillian’s ex-boyfriend dies under mysterious circumstances and returns as a menacing spirit, forcing the sisters to confront their family’s magical legacy. The story is adapted from Alice Hoffman’s novel of the same name.

Fans can expect both new and familiar faces when Practical Magic 2 arrives. While Bullock, Kidman, Wiest, and Channing are returning, the sequel will introduce Joey King, Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod. The follow-up film is set to be directed by Susanne Bier, known for hits like Bird Box and The Night Manager. The screenplay is penned by Akiva Goldsman, who co-wrote the first film, alongside Georgia Pritchett, a writer on Succession.

Though Evan Rachel Wood won’t be back as Kylie Owens, anticipation remains high as fans look forward to seeing how this magical story continues with a blend of original and new talent.
