India women’s captain Harmanpreet Kaur continued her phenomenal run in 2025 by scripting a historic milestone in international cricket. She became the most successful captain in women’s T20 internationals after leading India to a commanding eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the third match of the five-game series at the Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram.
With this win, Harmanpreet overtook former Australia skipper Meg Lanning to register the highest number of victories as a T20I captain. The Indian captain has now guided her team to 77 wins in 130 matches, surpassing Lanning’s tally of 76 wins from 100 games. She also holds the record for captaining the most women’s T20I matches. England captains Heather Knight and Charlotte Edwards remain close behind on the all-time list of successful leaders in the shortest format.
The year 2025 has turned into a landmark season for Harmanpreet. Earlier, she led India to their maiden women’s ODI World Cup title after a memorable final victory against South Africa in Navi Mumbai. Her leadership consistency and calm approach have been key factors behind India’s dominance across formats.
India’s success in the third T20I was not limited to the captain alone. Deepti Sharma reached a historic double milestone by becoming the first cricketer in T20 history to score 1000 runs and claim 150 wickets. Her three-wicket haul also saw her draw level with Australia’s Megan Schutt as the joint-highest wicket-taker in women’s T20 internationals.
On the field, Sri Lanka struggled once again as Renuka Singh Thakur’s four-wicket spell restricted them to 112 for 7. India chased the target comfortably in just 13.2 overs, thanks to an explosive knock of 79 from Shafali Verma. The win handed India an unassailable 3-0 lead in the series.
After the match, Harmanpreet praised her team’s aggressive mindset and bowling discipline, highlighting how the series performance would help prepare for the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup in 2026. India will look to extend their dominance when they face Sri Lanka in the fourth T20I at the same venue on December 28.
