Horror Filmmaker Jamie Blanks Passes Away at 54 Known for Urban Legend and Valentine

Australian filmmaker Jamie Blanks, best known for directing cult horror films like Urban Legend and Valentine, has passed away at the age of 54. His family confirmed that he died unexpectedly on March 20 at his home in Melbourne.

In a heartfelt statement shared on social media, his family described his passing as sudden despite recent health concerns. They highlighted his passion for filmmaking his kindness and his deep connection with both his work and the people around him. Even in recent times Blanks remained active in the industry developing new projects and supporting fellow filmmakers.

Born in Melbourne on November 29 1971 Blanks began his journey in cinema at Swinburne Film School. He gained recognition with his directorial debut Urban Legend which became a commercial success and earned a lasting following among horror fans worldwide.

The film starred several well known actors including Jared Leto and quickly established Blanks as a notable voice in the late 1990s horror genre. He followed this with Valentine a thriller centred around a masked killer targeting a group of friends which further cemented his place in early 2000s slasher cinema.

Beyond directing Blanks was also a talented composer contributing music to films such as Crawlspace, Nature’s Grave and several other independent projects.

Earlier this year he celebrated the 25th anniversary of Valentine expressing gratitude to fans for keeping the film alive over the years. His love for classic horror cinema was widely known with The Fog by John Carpenter being one of his key inspirations.

Blanks is survived by his wife Simone his son Oliver along with his parents and siblings. His legacy continues through his films which remain popular among horror enthusiasts and continue to inspire aspiring filmmakers.
