Players from Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders were seen wearing black armbands during their Indian Premier League 2026 match at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, drawing attention from fans and viewers. The gesture was later confirmed to be a mark of respect for former Indian cricketer C. D. Gopinath, who recently passed away at the age of 96.
The tribute was acknowledged during the live broadcast by former India coach Ravi Shastri, who explained that both teams chose to honor the late cricketer’s legacy. Shortly after the match began, officials from Kolkata Knight Riders also confirmed the reason behind the gesture.
At the toss, captain Ajinkya Rahane was spotted wearing the black armband, though the reason was not immediately disclosed. He went on to win the toss and opted to bowl first in the match.
C. D. Gopinath was one of the pioneers of Indian cricket and played a key role in shaping the early years of the national team. He was part of India’s historic first-ever Test victory against England in 1952, a landmark achievement in the country’s cricket history. Over his international career between 1951 and 1960, he featured in eight Test matches and made a strong impression with notable performances.
Beyond international cricket, Gopinath made significant contributions to domestic cricket, especially in Tamil Nadu, where he captained the state side. He played an instrumental role in helping the team secure its first Ranji Trophy title in the 1954-55 season, scoring a century in the final.
Following his retirement, he continued to serve Indian cricket in various capacities, including as a national selector and later as manager of the Indian team during the 1979 tour of England. His long-standing association with the sport earned him widespread respect across the cricketing community.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India also expressed deep condolences, recognizing his contributions during the formative years of Indian cricket and acknowledging his lasting legacy.
