James Gunn Confirms Lars Eidinger as Brainiac in Upcoming Superman Sequel Man of Tomorrow

Date:

DC Studios has officially revealed the actor stepping into one of Superman’s most iconic villain roles. Filmmaker James Gunn has confirmed that German actor Lars Eidinger will portray Brainiac in Man of Tomorrow, the highly anticipated sequel to Superman, scheduled for release in 2027. The announcement follows weeks of industry speculation and was personally shared by Gunn on social media, marking a major casting moment for the evolving DC Universe.

Known for his intense and cerebral performances, Lars Eidinger brings a distinctly global presence to the role. While he may not be a mainstream Hollywood star, Eidinger is widely respected for his work in European cinema and television, particularly in the acclaimed German series Babylon Berlin. His previous appearances in English-language projects such as All the Light We Cannot See and White Noise introduced him to international audiences, but Man of Tomorrow places him firmly at the center of a major franchise.

Brainiac, first introduced in Action Comics No. 242, is one of Superman’s most formidable enemies, defined not by brute strength but by intelligence, precision, and cold calculation. The character’s legacy includes shrinking entire cities and forcing unlikely alliances, including rare moments when Superman and Lex Luthor must work together to stop a greater threat. Gunn’s choice of Eidinger signals a more restrained and psychologically driven interpretation of the villain.

In Man of Tomorrow, David Corenswet returns as Superman, with Nicholas Hoult reprising his role as Lex Luthor. James Gunn will write and direct the film, producing alongside DC Studios co-chief Peter Safran. With a confirmed release date of July 9, 2027, the sequel is moving forward at a deliberate pace, reflecting Gunn’s hands-on vision for shaping the future of the DC Universe.
