Late-night television host Jimmy Kimmel returned to Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday night following his suspension, striking a noticeably softer tone regarding the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The host avoided mockery and instead referred to Kirk’s murder as a tragedy, acknowledging the pain of his family and praising his widow for her strength and forgiveness.
Kimmel had been suspended last Wednesday after widespread backlash over his controversial remarks linked to Kirk’s assassination. ABC, owned by Disney, announced the show’s return earlier this week after what it called “thoughtful conversations” with Kimmel. During the taping, audience members confirmed that Kimmel’s remarks were conciliatory, emphasizing that he did not make light of the activist’s death.
Reports suggested that Kimmel highlighted the Christian values shown by Kirk’s wife, who publicly forgave her husband’s killer. While softening his approach on this sensitive issue, Kimmel still continued to criticize the Donald Trump administration, blending seriousness with his trademark political commentary.
In response, President Donald Trump launched an attack on both Kimmel and ABC. On his Truth Social account, Trump accused ABC of pushing “99% positive Democrat garbage” and described Kimmel as a mouthpiece for the Democratic National Committee. Trump further suggested that legal action against the broadcaster could follow, hinting at a repeat of his previous financial disputes with the network.
The controversy surrounding Kimmel’s suspension had previously drawn criticism from both Republicans and Democrats, with some Disney subscribers canceling their streaming services in protest. As Kimmel resumes hosting duties, the debate over free speech, political bias, and media responsibility continues to divide opinion across the United States.
