Mitchell Santner admits anxiety as New Zealand national cricket team await Pakistan national cricket team result to keep ICC T20 World Cup 2026 hopes alive

Date:

New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner has acknowledged the tension in the camp after his side’s semi-final qualification chances at the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 were left hanging by a thread. The Black Caps’ defeat to England national cricket team in Colombo has shifted control away from them, meaning their progress now depends on the outcome of Pakistan’s clash with Sri Lanka.

New Zealand appeared well placed to secure a spot in the last four but the loss has opened the door for Pakistan national cricket team to remain in contention. While New Zealand still hold a superior net run rate, Pakistan can overtake them if they register a substantial victory. If batting first Pakistan would need to win by a margin exceeding 64 runs, while a chase would require sealing the target with at least 40 deliveries remaining to edge ahead.

Speaking after the match Santner admitted nerves would be unavoidable as his team watches events unfold. He said the situation is now beyond their control and they can only wait to see whether they book a flight onward in the tournament or head home. He added that a victory against England would have simplified matters considerably.

The decisive encounter saw England chase down 160 in dramatic fashion. With 43 runs required from the final three overs, Will Jacks and Rehan Ahmed turned the momentum by taking 22 runs off the 18th over, ultimately guiding their side to victory with four wickets in hand and three balls to spare. Santner reflected that New Zealand had controlled large phases of the contest but small execution errors in the closing stages proved costly. He credited England’s calculated approach in the death overs, particularly their willingness to target straighter boundaries compared to New Zealand’s tactics.

England’s win ensured they topped their Super 8 group and strengthened their position heading into the semi-finals. Meanwhile New Zealand must now rely on results elsewhere, with their fate resting on Pakistan’s performance.
