Naomi Osaka Defeats Coco Gauff at US Open 2025 to Enter First Grand Slam Quarterfinal Since 2021

Date:

Naomi Osaka delivered a stunning performance at the US Open 2025, defeating world No. 3 Coco Gauff 6-3, 6-2 in the round of 16. This victory marks Osaka’s first Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance since 2021, reigniting her status as a serious contender in women’s tennis.

Throughout the match, Osaka showcased her trademark power-hitting, booming serves, and calm composure that once earned her four Grand Slam titles. Unlike Gauff, who struggled with 33 unforced errors and frustration on court, Osaka maintained control and dictated rallies with precision. She converted all four of her break-point opportunities and never faced a break point herself, proving her dominance under pressure.

“I’m just enjoying myself and having fun again. Playing here means everything to me,” Osaka said after her victory, holding back tears of joy. She also reflected on her journey as a mother, sharing how she returned to competitive tennis after giving birth to her daughter Shai in July 2023.

Osaka now advances to face Karolina Muchova, a two-time US Open semifinalist and 2023 French Open finalist, in the quarterfinals. The clash promises to be intense, as Muchova defeated Osaka in the second round of the 2024 US Open.

This win also reminds fans of Osaka’s earlier achievements on hard courts, including US Open titles in 2018 and 2020 and Australian Open victories in 2019 and 2021. Beyond her athletic prowess, Osaka has been a global voice for mental health awareness since her 2021 French Open withdrawal, a moment that reshaped conversations around athletes and well-being.

For Gauff, the defeat was disappointing, but the young star remains resilient, vowing not to let this loss crush her spirit. Despite her struggles, Gauff remains one of the brightest talents in tennis, having already won two major titles — the US Open 2023 and French Open 2025.

With her return to top form, Osaka has reignited hope among her fans and positioned herself as a strong favorite heading into the final stages of the US Open 2025.
