Punjab Kings head coach Ricky Ponting has revealed that securing Shreyas Iyer during the IPL 2025 mega auction was a calculated priority, as the franchise continues its rebuild strategy ahead of the 2026 season. As PBKS prepare to kick off their campaign against Gujarat Titans in New Chandigarh, Iyer once again stands at the core of the team’s plans.
Ponting, who took charge of the franchise in 2024, explained that he deliberately managed the auction budget to ensure the team could acquire Iyer. Having previously worked with him, the former Australian captain expressed strong confidence in the Indian batter’s leadership and overall impact on the squad.
Punjab Kings entered the 2025 auction with a fresh approach, retaining only a couple of players and focusing on building a new core. With one of the largest purses available, the franchise targeted proven Indian talent, and Iyer emerged as the centerpiece of that strategy. He was eventually signed for ₹26.75 crore and entrusted with captaincy responsibilities.
The decision was not only about leadership but also about strengthening the team’s batting lineup. Iyer’s consistency and ability to anchor innings made him an ideal choice for a side looking to establish stability and direction. Ponting emphasized that building a successful IPL team often requires a strong Indian foundation, something PBKS aimed to achieve through this acquisition.
Beyond his role as captain, Iyer’s performances with the bat remain equally vital. Ponting highlighted that the batter showed exceptional form in the previous season and continues to display a strong hunger to perform at the highest level. This combination of skill and determination makes him a crucial asset for the team.
As Punjab Kings begin their IPL 2026 journey, the focus will be on translating this long-term vision into results. With Iyer leading both tactically and with the bat, the franchise hopes to finally secure its maiden IPL title and validate the rebuild centered around him.
