Renowned filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali has officially announced a new historical drama titled Jai Somnath marking a powerful collaboration with acclaimed director Ketan Mehta. The film is set against the backdrop of the events of 1025–1026 CE when Mahmud of Ghazni attacked the Somnath Temple in Gujarat a moment that left a lasting imprint on Indian history.
The announcement comes at a significant time as the year marks 1000 years since the historic invasion and the subsequent rebuilding of the sacred shrine. Jai Somnath aims to portray a deeply emotional narrative centred on faith resistance and the enduring strength of Indian civilisation.
Sharing the update through Bhansali Productions on Instagram the makers highlighted the film’s core message stating that while structures may fall belief remains unbroken. The post confirmed that the film will be released worldwide in cinemas in 2027.
The story of Somnath is widely regarded as a symbol of renewal and resilience. Despite repeated invasions and attempts at destruction over centuries the temple continued to rise again reflecting the unwavering devotion and courage of those who defended it. Jai Somnath seeks to bring this saga of sacrifice and spiritual strength to the big screen for a global audience.
Produced jointly by Bhansali Productions and Maya Movies the film will see Ketan Mehta taking on the dual role of writer and director while Bhansali serves as producer. With its historical scale emotional depth and strong cultural roots Jai Somnath is positioned as one of the most anticipated Indian films of 2027.
