Concerns continue to grow around MS Dhoni’s fitness and availability in IPL 2026, with former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar openly questioning the management decisions of Chennai Super Kings. Despite six matches into the tournament, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter has yet to make an appearance due to a calf injury sustained just before the season began.
Initially expected to return within two weeks, Dhoni’s absence has now extended beyond three weeks, leaving fans and analysts uncertain about his comeback timeline. The situation has also sparked debate around how the team is managing his role, especially with the Impact Player rule in play.
In Dhoni’s absence, Chennai Super Kings have struggled to maintain consistency. After losing their opening three matches, the team briefly bounced back with two consecutive wins before slipping again, remaining in the lower half of the points table. Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has faced increasing scrutiny, not only for team results but also for his individual form, having scored just 82 runs in six innings.
Speaking on a cricket podcast, Sanjay Manjrekar defended Gaikwad and shifted the focus toward the franchise’s decision-making process. He suggested that the uncertainty surrounding MS Dhoni’s role and return has added unnecessary pressure on the young captain.
Manjrekar also pointed out that the immense fan following of Dhoni sometimes complicates objective analysis, recalling instances where criticism of the former captain led to backlash. He emphasized the need to focus on team performance rather than individual popularity.
The discussion also touched on whether Dhoni’s eventual return would solve the team’s issues. Manjrekar expressed skepticism, noting that Dhoni’s recent appearances in past seasons were limited and not a sustainable long-term solution. Integrating him back into the playing XI, he argued, may not be straightforward.
As of now, there is still no official confirmation regarding Dhoni’s availability for the upcoming match against Mumbai Indians. While he continues to travel with the squad, team officials, including batting coach Michael Hussey, have indicated that the veteran is making steady progress in recovery.
With uncertainty lingering, the focus remains on how Chennai Super Kings will handle the situation moving forward and whether Dhoni can make a timely return to influence their campaign.
