Indian cricket captain Shubman Gill has made it clear that winning the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2027 is a major objective for him and the national team. The upcoming tournament will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, giving India another opportunity to chase the prestigious 50 over title.
Speaking at a recent awards ceremony organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India in New Delhi, Gill reflected on India’s strong run in global tournaments over the past few years. The team has enjoyed considerable success, winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup twice in 2024 and 2026 and also lifting the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025.
Despite those achievements the memory of the 2023 ODI World Cup final still remains fresh for the Indian side. In that tournament India had an outstanding campaign and entered the final unbeaten but were defeated by Australia national cricket team at Narendra Modi Stadium.
The Australian victory was powered by an impressive century from Travis Head, which ended India’s dream of lifting the trophy on home soil. The defeat left a strong impression on the Indian squad and has motivated players to target the next edition with even greater determination.
Gill stated that winning the 50 over World Cup remains the ultimate ambition for the team. He acknowledged that the Indian side had come extremely close in the previous tournament and believes the 2027 event will offer another valuable chance to achieve that goal.
India has not won the ODI World Cup since 2011 and the upcoming competition represents a major opportunity to end that long wait. Gill believes the team’s recent success in T20 tournaments proves they have the ability to perform on the global stage.
Although Gill was not part of India’s latest T20 World Cup winning squad after struggling with form earlier, the captain is determined to lead the team toward future success. He also highlighted the leadership example set by Suryakumar Yadav, whose tactical decisions during the T20 tournament helped India defend their title.
With experienced players such as Jasprit Bumrah playing key roles in recent victories, Gill believes the team has the talent and mindset required to challenge for cricket’s biggest prize in the next ODI World Cup.
