Simple Walking Habit Can Boost Brain Growth in Adults Says Harvard Trained Doctor

A leading US physician with training from Harvard Columbia and Cornell has highlighted a surprisingly simple way to support brain health even in adulthood. According to Dr Amy Shah, incorporating regular walking into your routine may help improve memory learning and overall neurological function without the need for intense workouts.

Speaking on a recent podcast, Dr Shah explained that walking for around 40 minutes just three times a week can positively impact the brain. She pointed out that this low-impact activity may help increase the size of the hippocampus, a key brain region responsible for memory and learning that tends to shrink with age.

Rather than focusing only on high-intensity exercise, Dr Shah emphasised the importance of gentle and consistent movement, especially for women in midlife. As a result, cortisol levels may rise more easily, leading to issues like brain fog fatigue and reduced mental clarity.

Walking, she explained, plays a major role in managing these stress hormones. It not only encourages physical activity but also helps calm the nervous system and improve mood. Spending time outdoors while walking can further enhance these benefits by promoting relaxation and mental well-being.

Dr Shah also highlighted that as people age their ability to cope with both physical and emotional stress decreases. Activities that once felt manageable may start to feel overwhelming. This makes recovery and restorative habits more important than ever.

She recommends prioritising daily habits such as walking in nature getting enough sleep and allowing the body time to recover. These practices can help balance stress hormones support brain function and improve overall quality of life.
