Sony Pictures Classics has officially acquired worldwide distribution rights to Wishful Thinking, the debut feature from director Graham Parkes. The romantic drama with a supernatural twist stars Maya Hawke and Lewis Pullman, and is scheduled for a theatrical release in 2027.
The film first gained attention at the South by Southwest, where it premiered to audiences intrigued by its unusual blend of romance, humor, and fantastical elements. The story follows Julia, a frustrated video game designer, and Charlie, a struggling musician, whose turbulent relationship takes a bizarre turn after attending couples therapy. Their emotional energy begins to influence real-world events, triggering unexpected consequences such as natural disturbances and fluctuations in global systems.
As their bond intensifies, so do the stakes, forcing the couple to confront whether their love can endure the chaos they unintentionally create. The narrative explores the delicate balance between passion and instability, adding a unique layer to the traditional romantic storyline.
The supporting cast includes Randall Park, Kate Berlant, and Kerri Kenney-Silver, among others, contributing to the film’s dynamic tone.
In a statement, Sony Pictures Classics expressed confidence in the film’s appeal, highlighting its mix of emotional depth and humor, as well as the strong on-screen chemistry between its lead actors. Director Graham Parkes also shared his excitement, noting that partnering with a distributor known for supporting independent cinema marks a significant milestone for the project.
Critics have already pointed out the compelling dynamic between Hawke and Pullman, emphasizing how their performances bring authenticity and warmth to characters navigating a volatile relationship. Their interactions, marked by humor and vulnerability, help ground the film’s more imaginative elements.
Produced by Pinky Promise alongside Buckwild Pictures and Highway 10, the film brings together a team of experienced creatives, with several executive producers supporting its development. The distribution agreement was finalized in collaboration with the UTA Independent Film Group, representing the filmmakers.
With its distinctive concept and strong performances, Wishful Thinking is shaping up to be a notable addition to the upcoming slate of independent films, offering audiences a fresh take on romance infused with unexpected twists.
