While discussing the value of watching movies in theatres Spielberg emphasized how live art forms bring audiences together in unique ways. Without mentioning Chalamet directly he referenced the debate sparked by the actor’s earlier remark that people no longer care about ballet or opera.

Spielberg explained that although he appreciates modern streaming platforms and has collaborated with Netflix, he still believes the traditional theatre experience remains powerful. According to him watching a film in a cinema creates a collective emotional journey where strangers gather in one space and share reactions together.

He also noted that similar emotional connections can be experienced during concerts ballet performances and opera shows. His comments drew laughter and applause from the audience as he stressed that these art forms should continue to thrive and remain part of global culture.

The discussion followed a wave of criticism directed at Chalamet after his remarks during a public conversation with actor Matthew McConaughey at the University of Texas at Austin.
