Try This Quick and Spicy Nepali Aloo Sadeko Recipe for Your Perfect Evening Snack

Date:

If you’re craving something light spicy and packed with flavor to accompany your evening tea Aloo Sadeko from Nepal is the perfect dish to try. This traditional Nepali recipe offers a refreshing take on potato snacks without the heaviness of regular potato salads or the oiliness of fried options like pakoras or chaats.

Aloo Sadeko is essentially a spiced potato pickle that’s quick to prepare uses minimal ingredients and delivers a punch of bold taste with each bite. It’s especially suited for warm weather and pairs beautifully with your favorite chai or evening refreshments.

To prepare Aloo Sadeko you’ll need 3 to 4 boiled peeled and diced potatoes 2 to 3 dry red chillies 1 teaspoon Sichuan pepper 1 to 2 teaspoons sesame seeds 1 teaspoon cumin seeds 3 to 4 garlic cloves 1-inch piece of ginger 1 sliced red onion salt to taste 2 teaspoons chopped coriander leaves 1 teaspoon chopped mint leaves 2 to 3 teaspoons lime juice 2 to 3 tablespoons mustard oil 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds (optional) and ½ teaspoon red chilli powder.

Start by roasting the dry red chillies Sichuan pepper cumin seeds and sesame seeds in a pan on low flame for 2 to 3 minutes until aromatic and lightly golden. Grind them with garlic and ginger into a coarse paste. In a mixing bowl combine the boiled potatoes with sliced onion coriander mint sesame seeds salt red chilli powder and lime juice. Heat mustard oil in a pan until it smokes switch off the heat and let it cool for a minute before adding red chilli powder and fenugreek seeds. Pour the infused oil over the potato mixture and stir until everything is well coated. Allow the mixture to rest for 30 minutes before serving so the flavors meld beautifully.

A quick tip — if you’re using mustard oil skip the fenugreek seeds since the oil already has a robust aroma. If you’re using a milder oil the fenugreek adds a lovely earthy note that complements the spices well.

Whether served as an appetizer a side dish or a tea-time snack this Nepali-style Aloo Sadeko is a delicious twist on traditional potato recipes that brings heat tang and satisfaction to your plate.
