Astronomy experts in the United Arab Emirates have shared early expectations regarding the start of Eid Al Adha in 2026, which is anticipated to bring the longest holiday break of the year. The festival, one of the most significant occasions in Islam, is expected to fall toward the end of May, offering residents an extended period of time off.
Eid Al Adha, known as the Festival of Sacrifice, marks the end of the annual pilgrimage (Hajj) to Mecca. In the UAE, public holidays are determined through a combination of the Islamic Hijri calendar and the Gregorian calendar. Since the Hijri calendar follows the lunar cycle, official dates depend on moon sightings and are confirmed closer to the time.
Based on astronomical calculations, experts suggest that the Islamic month of Dhu Al Hijjah is likely to begin on Monday, May 18, 2026. If this projection holds true, Arafat Day will fall on Tuesday, May 26, marking the beginning of a four-day public holiday that includes Eid Al Adha celebrations.
When combined with the weekend, residents could enjoy a total break of up to six days, making it the longest holiday period of the year in the UAE. However, these dates remain provisional until the official moon sighting confirmation at the end of Dhu Al Qa’dah, the preceding Islamic month.
Current predictions also indicate that Dhu Al Qa’dah may begin on Sunday, April 19, and is expected to last 29 days. Final confirmation will depend on lunar observations by the relevant authorities.
