When Should Couples Consider IVF? Doctor Highlights 7 Key Fertility Warning Signs

Date:

In vitro fertilisation (IVF) is often considered when natural conception or basic fertility treatments do not lead to pregnancy. While many couples delay seeking advanced treatment, medical experts say recognising early warning signs can help avoid unnecessary waiting and improve outcomes.

According to fertility specialist Dr Monika Gupta, infertility is more common than many realise, affecting approximately one in seven couples at some stage. Despite this, many people hesitate to explore options like IVF, often hoping things will work naturally over time.

Fertility is strongly linked to age. Women experience peak fertility in their 20s, with a noticeable decline after the age of 35. For men, sperm quality may begin to decrease around the age of 40. If pregnancy does not occur after 6 to 12 months of trying, especially with proper timing, it may be time to consult a specialist and consider advanced treatments.

Doctors usually begin with simpler approaches such as lifestyle changes medications or intrauterine insemination (IUI). However, IVF becomes a recommended option when these methods are unsuccessful or when specific medical conditions are identified.

One of the most common signs is difficulty conceiving despite regular attempts over several months. This could indicate hidden issues such as ovulation irregularities or reduced sperm quality. Another major indicator is irregular or absent menstrual cycles, which may point to conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid disorders affecting ovulation.

Recurrent miscarriages, especially two or more, can also signal underlying genetic or structural concerns. In such cases, IVF combined with genetic testing can improve the chances of a healthy pregnancy.

Male infertility is another significant factor, contributing to nearly 40 percent of cases. Issues such as low sperm count abnormal shape or poor motility can affect fertilisation. Advanced IVF techniques like ICSI can directly assist fertilisation in such scenarios.

Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes due to infections endometriosis or past surgeries can prevent natural conception. IVF bypasses the fallopian tubes entirely by fertilising the egg outside the body.

Additionally, women with reduced ovarian reserve or those of advanced maternal age may benefit from timely IVF intervention, as egg quality and quantity decline significantly over time. Hormonal tests can help assess fertility levels and guide treatment decisions.

Finally, if previous treatments such as IUI or medications have failed after multiple cycles, IVF is often considered the next step due to its higher success rates in suitable candidates.

Experts emphasise that early evaluation and timely medical advice are crucial. Understanding these warning signs can help couples make informed decisions and improve their chances of starting a family.
