Why Shubman Gill Missed India’s T20 World Cup Squad Despite Long-Term BCCI Plans

Date:

Shubman Gill’s exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad has sparked widespread debate, especially after months of signals suggesting he was being groomed as a future all-format leader. The surprise announcement by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia shifted attention away from the rest of the squad, with fans and experts questioning how one of India’s most consistent performers in franchise cricket was left out of the 15-member team.

Over the last four months, Gill struggled to find momentum in international T20s, managing only 291 runs across 15 innings at a strike rate slightly above 137, without a single half-century and a highest score of 47. While these numbers were modest by his standards, they contrasted sharply with his IPL performances, where he has crossed the 400-run mark in six consecutive seasons. His peak came in IPL 2023, when he scored 890 runs to claim the Orange Cap, and in IPL 2025 he followed it up with 650 runs at a strike rate of 155.88 while captaining Gujarat Titans.

According to reports, Gill had been assured a defined role in the T20 setup ahead of the last IPL season. The plan was to position him as a stabilising opener, similar to the role Virat Kohli played in earlier T20 World Cups, anchoring the innings while aggressive batters played around him. This assurance reportedly influenced team selections and even affected Sanju Samson’s batting position at franchise level, as Gill was seen as a long-term investment in leadership across formats.

However, the strategy appeared to unravel once Gill returned to the T20I side. Team insiders suggest that uncertainty over whether he should attack aggressively or play the anchor role left him caught in between. The revamped T20 approach focused on relentless pressure and high scoring rates, and Gill struggled to strike the right balance between stability and power-hitting. With captain Suryakumar Yadav also enduring a lean run, the pressure increased on the middle order and bowlers to compensate.

Ultimately, selectors opted for a reset, reinstating Sanju Samson as opener and naming Ishan Kishan as the backup wicketkeeper, following his strong domestic form. Gill’s omission reflects not just a dip in numbers, but a breakdown between long-term planning and short-term execution, leaving one of India’s most promising batters watching the T20 World Cup from the sidelines.
