Michael Vaughan Slams England’s Ashes Collapse Under Ben Stokes After 11-Day Defeat

Date:

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has delivered a sharp and uncompromising verdict on Ben Stokes’ England side following their crushing Ashes loss in Australia. England surrendered the series inside just 11 days after defeat in the Adelaide Test handed Australia an unassailable 3-0 lead, extending England’s winless Test streak Down Under to 15 years.

Vaughan criticised England’s much-hyped Bazball philosophy, stating that while the aggressive approach may have worked against lesser opposition, it has been badly exposed against elite teams like Australia and India. Under the leadership of captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum, England are yet to win a Test series against either of the so-called Big Two, a statistic that has intensified scrutiny back home.

Writing in his newspaper column, Vaughan described England’s recent performances as “humbling” and suggested that a sense of overconfidence had built up over the past three years. He argued that this attitude made England an easy target and said the wider cricketing world was eager to see them brought back down to earth. According to Vaughan, Australia’s players and fans have been stunned by how fragile England have looked given the talent available in the squad.

The former skipper also questioned the belief that England’s current style would succeed in Australian conditions, pointing out that history shows success Down Under comes from patience discipline and relentless bowling pressure. Vaughan added that England lacked all three during this Ashes campaign.

Despite the series being lost, Vaughan insisted the tour still matters. With two Tests remaining in Melbourne and Sydney, he urged players to fight for their futures, warning that some careers may be nearing the end. Any victory in Australia, he said, would still be significant and could shape England’s long-term rebuild ahead of future Ashes battles.

The fourth Test of the Ashes series is set to begin at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on Boxing Day, where England will look to salvage pride after a chastening tour.
