The finale of Wicked: For Good delivers an emotional twist as audiences finally learn what truly happens to Elphaba after Dorothy splashes her with water. The 2025 sequel continues the story of Glinda and Elphaba, expanding the world introduced in the 2024 film adaptation. Directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Jonathan Bailey, the musical fantasy reveals the complex events that shape the legends of the Good Witch and the Wicked Witch.
In this retelling, the film highlights the strained yet unbreakable bond between Glinda and Elphaba. While the public believes they became enemies, the narrative uncovers that their friendship secretly endured despite political pressure and the Wizard’s manipulation. Branded a fugitive, Elphaba works to expose the Wizard’s lies and save the animals of Oz, while Glinda’s rising fame silently weighs on her conscience.
The story intensifies when Glinda learns that her fiancé Fiyero is deeply in love with Elphaba, leading Glinda into a storm of jealousy and regret. Madame Morrible creates the whirlwind that brings Dorothy’s house to Oz, tragically killing Elphaba’s sister Nessarose. When Elphaba returns for the enchanted shoes, she discovers Glinda has already passed them to Dorothy, deepening the rift between the former friends.
Events escalate when Elphaba transforms Fiyero into the Scarecrow to save him from harm. At the same time, Glinda finally recognises the Wizard’s corruption and confronts her own mistakes. Elphaba entrusts her with the Grimmerie, believing Glinda will use it responsibly. Dorothy unexpectedly throws water on Elphaba, leading everyone to believe she has melted. Glinda returns to Emerald City, exposes the Wizard as Elphaba’s father, and takes control of Oz after imprisoning Madame Morrible.
The final reveal changes everything: Elphaba survived. She escapes through a hidden trap door and reunites with Scarecrow Fiyero, choosing freedom over fame. Later, Glinda discovers through the spell book that her friend is alive, offering closure and hope as Elphaba and Fiyero leave Oz behind.
