Pakistan is expected to stick with its decision to not play the highly anticipated T20 World Cup group-stage match against India scheduled for February 15 in Colombo. Reports indicate that the Pakistan Cricket Board is aligned with the direction issued by the Pakistan government and is unlikely to reverse its position. As a result the clash between the two rivals may not take place unless there is a last-minute policy shift.
The decision to avoid the fixture is believed to be linked to Pakistan expressing support for Bangladesh following their removal from the tournament and replacement by Scotland. This change occurred after Bangladesh declined to travel to India citing security concerns which led the International Cricket Council to intervene. While the government directive addressed the group-stage match it did not clarify Pakistan’s stance if the two teams were to meet later in the knockout stages. According to reports any potential semi-final or final encounter would also require explicit approval from the Pakistan government.
Although the government has publicly stated its position the PCB has yet to formally notify the ICC. In response the global cricket body has urged Pakistan to reconsider highlighting possible long-term consequences. If Pakistan officially forfeits the match India would receive two points and Pakistan’s net run rate would be negatively affected under tournament regulations. The ICC may also consider sanctions as the match was scheduled at a neutral venue under a prior agreement involving all boards.
Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha addressed the situation before departing for Colombo stating that the players would respect the decisions taken by the government and the board. He emphasized that the team remains focused on its overall campaign and aims to win its remaining group matches to progress further in the tournament. Pakistan and India are set to begin their T20 World Cup journeys against the Netherlands and USA respectively with both sides also scheduled to play warm-up games earlier in the week.
