Rising horror filmmaker Curry Barker is reportedly in negotiations to write and direct a fresh installment of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, marking a significant new chapter for the iconic franchise. The project is being developed by A24, known for its unique and modern approach to storytelling.
This new film will exist independently from the upcoming television adaptation of the same franchise, which is also in development under A24 with involvement from Glen Powell and others. The decision to bring Barker onboard highlights the studio’s strategy to refresh the long running horror series for a new generation of viewers.
Curry Barker has quickly gained attention in the film industry following his unconventional rise. Beginning with low budget content on YouTube, he created a horror film on a minimal budget that went viral and attracted widespread interest. His upcoming feature Obsession further boosted his reputation after becoming one of the biggest acquisitions at a major film festival, securing a multimillion dollar deal with Focus Features.
Although plot details for the new The Texas Chainsaw Massacre installment remain under wraps, Barker has previously expressed admiration for the franchise, suggesting his version may bring a modern perspective while respecting its legacy. The original 1974 film became a landmark in horror cinema, known for its raw storytelling and commercial success despite a modest budget.
Production will include experienced industry figures such as Roy Lee and Steven Schneider, among others. Meanwhile, Barker continues to build momentum in his career, with his next project Anything But Ghosts already completed and his feature Obsession set for release in May.
With A24 backing the project, the reboot aims to combine the franchise’s gritty roots with elevated storytelling, potentially introducing the legendary horror series to a younger and broader audience.
