Norwegian champions Bodø/Glimt delivered one of the most dramatic shocks of the season by eliminating Italian league leaders Inter Milan from the UEFA Champions League. A 2-1 victory in the second leg at San Siro secured a commanding 5-2 aggregate win sending the Serie A giants crashing out in the playoff round.
Inter entered the tie as favourites especially given their dominant domestic campaign where they sit comfortably at the top of Serie A. However their European form once again told a different story. After suffering a 3-1 defeat in Norway in the first leg the Nerazzurri needed a strong response at home but failed to overturn the deficit despite creating numerous chances.
The Italian side controlled possession and registered 32 attempts on goal compared to just seven from the visitors. Yet clinical finishing proved decisive as Bodø/Glimt capitalised on key moments while goalkeeper Nikita Haikin produced a series of crucial saves to frustrate the hosts.
This latest upset adds to an already remarkable European run for the Norwegian club who have previously taken points off some of the continent’s biggest sides this season. Their high energy pressing style and fearless attacking approach have made them one of the tournament’s surprise packages.
For Inter the defeat highlights ongoing struggles in Europe. Although they reached last season’s final their heavy loss to Paris Saint Germain exposed vulnerabilities. A managerial change saw Cristian Chivu take charge but squad reinforcements were limited and inconsistencies have persisted in continental competition.
Inter began this Champions League campaign strongly with three consecutive wins but later suffered a string of defeats in the league phase narrowly missing automatic qualification. The playoff route ultimately proved costly as Bodø/Glimt outperformed them across both legs.
While Inter remain favourites to secure the Serie A title their early European exit will raise questions about their ability to compete at the highest continental level. For Bodø/Glimt however the historic victory marks another milestone in an extraordinary Champions League journey.
