Rob Lowe Officially Reveals St. Elmo’s Fire Sequel Plans After 40 Years: Here’s Why the Beloved Characters Are Returning

Date:

After nearly four decades, Rob Lowe has officially confirmed that a sequel to St. Elmo’s Fire is finally in development. The 61-year-old actor shared his excitement in an interview with People, saying, “We’re working on the script and it’s really getting good.” Lowe originally portrayed the unforgettable William “Billy” Hicks — the rebellious saxophone player who struggled to leave behind his college party lifestyle.

Released in 1985, the iconic coming-of-age movie followed a tight-knit group of friends figuring out life during the confusing period after college graduation. Even today, fans remain deeply attached to these characters and their stories, which is exactly why Lowe feels it’s the right time to revisit them. “It makes so much sense to bring them back now,” he explained. “It’s fascinating to see how they would face this stage of life because it’s every bit as complicated as when you’re asking ‘What’s next after college?’”

The original film, directed and co-written by Joel Schumacher, starred an ensemble of Brat Pack icons including Emilio Estevez as Kirby Keager, a law student and waiter at St. Elmo’s Bar; Andrew McCarthy as Kevin Dolenz, an aspiring writer; and Demi Moore as the adventurous banker Julianna “Jules” Van Patten. Other cast members like Judd Nelson, Ally Sheedy, Mare Winningham, Andie MacDowell, Martin Balsam, Joyce Van Patten, Jenny Wright, and Blake Clark also brought the story to life under producer Lauren Shuler’s banner.

While there’s no release date yet, Lowe’s announcement has revived nostalgia for fans who are eager to see what these characters look like in a whole new phase of adulthood. One thing’s certain: this sequel promises to deliver more heartfelt drama, laughter, and relatable moments just like the original did decades ago.
