Do Egg Yolks Really Trigger Heart Attacks? Expert Busts Popular Cholesterol Myth

Eggs have long been considered one of the most nutritious and affordable sources of protein, yet many people still avoid consuming the yolk due to concerns about cholesterol and heart health. A widely გავრცელ belief suggests that egg yolks can increase the risk of heart attacks, prompting some individuals to eat only egg whites. However, recent expert insights challenge this long-standing assumption.

Dr. Manan Vora, an orthopaedic surgeon and health educator based in Mumbai, has addressed this misconception, calling it one of the biggest myths in modern nutrition. According to him, the idea that egg yolks directly lead to heart attacks is not supported by current scientific understanding. He explains that a significant portion of the body’s cholesterol—around 70 to 80 percent—is naturally produced by the liver. When dietary cholesterol is consumed, such as from eggs, the body typically regulates its own production to maintain balance.

For most healthy individuals, moderate consumption of eggs does not significantly raise blood cholesterol levels or increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This means that avoiding egg yolks entirely may not be necessary for the general population.

In addition to clarifying the myth, Dr. Vora highlights the impressive nutritional value of eggs. A single egg contains approximately 70 to 75 calories and around six grams of high-quality protein, including all nine essential amino acids required for muscle repair and growth. Eggs are also rich in vital nutrients such as vitamins A, D, and B12, along with minerals like iron and selenium. They provide choline, which supports brain function, and antioxidants like lutein and zeaxanthin that contribute to eye health and cellular protection.

Given their nutrient density, eggs can be a valuable part of a balanced diet. Experts suggest that dietary decisions should be guided by scientific evidence rather than outdated myths, especially when it comes to whole foods like eggs.
