Dubai is set to take another step toward smart mobility with the introduction of an innovative driverless transport solution known as Glydways. The initiative, announced by the Roads and Transport Authority, aims to ease congestion and provide a faster more efficient way to travel across the city.
The Glydways system will consist of compact self driving electric pods operating on dedicated narrow tracks separate from regular road traffic. These pods are designed to carry between four and six passengers and can travel at speeds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Each vehicle is expected to offer a range of approximately 250 kilometres.
According to the Roads and Transport Authority, the system will be capable of transporting over 10000 passengers per hour in each direction making it a highly efficient urban mobility solution. The pods will run on lightweight guideways that can be built either at ground level or elevated allowing flexible deployment across different parts of the city.
Initial plans suggest that the system will be introduced in multiple key areas across Dubai including routes connecting the National Paints Metro Station to Bluewaters. Additional locations under consideration include Madinat Jumeirah, Alserkal Avenue, Times Square Center, and Dubai Festival City.
The project is also expected to integrate with parking infrastructure through collaboration with Parkin, enabling convenient park and ride options for commuters.
This advanced system uses artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicle technology to operate independently offering on demand transport services around the clock. Designed to fit within compact spaces similar to a bike lane the system promises to be cost effective quick to deploy and environmentally friendly.
With the rollout of Glydways, Dubai continues to strengthen its position as a global leader in smart transportation aiming to provide residents and visitors with seamless connected and sustainable travel options.
