India began their T20 World Cup 2026 campaign with a hard-earned victory as captain Suryakumar Yadav produced a calm and commanding innings against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium. Chasing momentum after an early collapse, Suryakumar’s unbeaten 84 proved decisive as India secured a 29-run win to open their title defence on a positive note.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir was full of admiration for his skipper and addressed the team in the dressing room following the match. In a video released by BCCI TV Gambhir described the innings as a masterclass and one of the finest T20 performances played under pressure. He highlighted the importance of the knock in stabilising the innings after India were reduced to 77 for six inside the first 12 overs.
The USA bowlers made full use of a tricky surface and applied sustained pressure early on dismissing opener Abhishek Sharma for a duck and keeping India on the back foot. With wickets falling regularly Suryakumar showed composure and experience selecting the right moments to attack while maintaining control of the innings. His 49-ball effort included ten boundaries and four sixes lifting India to 161 for nine at the end of 20 overs.
India’s bowlers then complemented the batting effort with a disciplined performance restricting the USA to 132 for eight and sealing a crucial win. Speaking after the match Suryakumar admitted the game served as a valuable early reminder of the challenges ahead. He noted that adapting to unfamiliar conditions and staying at the crease were key factors in guiding the team out of trouble.
India will now turn their focus to their next Group A fixture against Namibia scheduled to take place in Delhi on February 12 as they continue their quest to defend the world title.
