Long-Term Use of Acid Reflux Medicines May Harm Gut Health and Nutrient Absorption Says Doctor

Date:

People dealing with frequent acidity or Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease often rely on medications to manage symptoms like heartburn and ulcers. However, medical experts are cautioning against prolonged use of certain acid-reducing drugs due to potential health risks.

According to Dr Kunal Sood, medications such as Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) are effective in the short term but may lead to complications when used for extended periods without proper medical supervision.

One of the primary concerns is the impact on nutrient absorption. Stomach acid plays a vital role in breaking down food and enabling the body to absorb essential nutrients like vitamin B12 magnesium and iron. Long-term suppression of acid production can interfere with this process potentially leading to deficiencies and conditions such as low magnesium levels.

Another important issue involves the Gut Microbiome. Reduced stomach acid weakens the body’s natural defense against harmful bacteria allowing more microbes from the mouth and upper digestive tract to reach the intestines. This imbalance can lead to reduced microbial diversity and overgrowth of unwanted bacteria which may disrupt overall gut health.

Experts also warn about an increased risk of infections. When stomach acid levels are low harmful microorganisms are less likely to be neutralised before reaching the intestines. This has been associated with a higher likelihood of infections including Clostridioides difficile infection which can cause severe digestive issues.

While some concerns such as links to dementia or kidney disease have been discussed in studies Dr Kunal Sood notes that strong evidence is still lacking in these areas and more research is needed.

Medical guidelines recommend using acid-reducing medications only when necessary at the lowest effective dose and for the shortest duration possible. Regular evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to ensure that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Understanding that stomach acid is crucial not just for digestion but also for maintaining a balanced internal environment highlights the importance of cautious and informed use of these medications.
