Mohammed Siraj’s World Cup journey took an unexpected turn as the Hyderabad fast bowler went from spending time with his family to leading India’s bowling attack within a single day. Not originally part of India’s plans for the T20 World Cup Siraj received a sudden call from captain Suryakumar Yadav asking him to report immediately for duty following an injury setback in the squad.
Siraj had been on a short break after domestic commitments and was preparing for a family holiday when the call arrived. Within hours he found himself in Mumbai joining the team in the early hours of the morning and being thrown straight into action at the Wankhede Stadium against the United States. Filling in for an unwell Jasprit Bumrah the pace bowler responded with calm authority and produced a disciplined spell to finish with impressive figures of three wickets for 29 runs helping India secure a 29 run victory.
Despite not playing a T20 international since mid 2024 Siraj relied on his experience and match fitness gained from Ranji Trophy cricket. He explained that mental readiness is the most important factor when stepping into a World Cup environment especially under pressure. Drawing on nearly a decade of international experience he focused on sticking to proven plans rather than forcing the game.
Siraj’s performance highlighted his evolution as a white ball bowler. Once known for raw pace and aggression he now operates with greater control using subtle variations in line length and pace to outthink batters. His ability to read conditions and bowl wicket to wicket proved crucial on a surface where the new ball was not easy to hit. Early breakthroughs shifted momentum in India’s favour after a modest batting total.
The Indian team management had already seen Siraj’s consistency in the recent ODI series where he stood out as the most economical bowler even in high scoring matches. That form combined with his mental toughness made him the obvious choice when a replacement was needed. Motivated by a simple belief message on his phone wallpaper Siraj once again showed why being prepared at all times is essential at the highest level of cricket.
