Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi delivered a blunt response amid speculation of possible ICC sanctions as uncertainty loomed over Pakistan’s participation in the high-voltage India versus Pakistan match at the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. After days of intense back-and-forth Pakistan officially confirmed it will face India on February 15 in Colombo following clearance from the Government of Pakistan late on Monday night.
The decision came after a crucial meeting held on February 8 at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium involving Naqvi Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam and a two-member ICC delegation. Once visuals from the meeting surfaced it became evident that Pakistan was reconsidering its earlier stance and preparing for a reversal.
Before the government made its position official Naqvi addressed media reports suggesting that the ICC could impose sanctions if Pakistan skipped the match against India. Appearing unfazed the PCB chief who also serves as Pakistan’s Interior Minister dismissed the threat outright and invoked the authority of Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Asim Munir while responding to reporters.
Naqvi stated that Pakistan was not intimidated by external pressure and made it clear that the board was not concerned about punitive action. His remarks echoed his firm posture during earlier controversies including the Asia Cup 2025 episode when India declined to accept the trophy from him.
Earlier in the day Naqvi’s presence at the Multan Sultans auction had sparked speculation that an announcement regarding the India fixture was imminent. At that point he maintained that consultations were ongoing and that he was awaiting guidance from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif before issuing a final decision.
Interestingly at the time there was no official ICC communication regarding sanctions. Hours later the ICC clarified that Bangladesh would not face penalties for its World Cup-related decisions and would also be granted hosting rights for a future global event. This development played a key role in Pakistan’s late-night clearance to participate in the India match.
Naqvi’s interactions with local media also offered the strongest indication that a turnaround was coming. He spoke positively about the ICC delegation’s visit emphasizing hospitality and mutual respect which further signaled that Pakistan would honor the marquee fixture. While Bangladesh’s demands from the ICC were outlined in an official release details of Pakistan’s position remain undisclosed.
