Brazil winger Rodrygo will miss the remainder of the season with Real Madrid and will not feature at the upcoming FIFA World Cup after the club confirmed he has sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament along with meniscus damage in his right knee.
The 25 year old forward picked up the injury during Madrid’s 1-0 defeat to Getafe CF on Monday. He had only recently returned to action after spending close to a month sidelined with tendinitis and entered the match as a substitute before suffering the setback.
Real Madrid released an official medical update confirming the severity of the knee injury. The Brazilian international later shared an emotional message on social media describing the moment as one of the most difficult days of his career. He admitted the injury was something he had always feared and expressed disappointment at missing both the club run in and the World Cup with Brazil.
Neither the Spanish giants nor the Brazilian Football Confederation have provided specific details regarding surgery or a recovery timeline. The national federation extended its support and wished the winger a smooth and speedy rehabilitation.
Rodrygo was part of Brazil’s squad at the 2022 FIFA World Cup featuring in all five matches before the Seleção were eliminated on penalties in the quarterfinals by Croatia national football team. He also featured in recent international friendlies under head coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Brazil captain Neymar who endured a similar ACL and meniscus injury in 2023 shared a heartfelt message encouraging Rodrygo to remain mentally strong and surround himself with loved ones during recovery.
This season Rodrygo made 27 appearances in all competitions for Real Madrid scoring three goals and contributing six assists. The club continues to cope with injury concerns elsewhere in the squad including forward Kylian Mbappé.
