Warner Bros. developing Aegon’s Conquest with Beau Willimon attached as writer

Date:

A new cinematic chapter in the world of Westeros is officially in the works. Warner Bros. is moving ahead with plans for a feature film inspired by the universe of Game of Thrones marking the franchise’s first large scale theatrical adaptation.

The upcoming project will reportedly focus on Aegon I Targaryen and his legendary conquest of Westeros. Beau Willimon known for his writing work on Andor and House of Cards is onboard to pen the screenplay. The story is expected to chronicle how Aegon alongside his sister wives used three dragons to defeat rival kingdoms ultimately unifying six territories under Targaryen rule and reshaping the political map of Westeros.

The origins of the Targaryen dynasty are detailed in Fire & Blood written by George R. R. Martin Parts of that fictional history were previously adapted into House of the Dragon which explores the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Timeline wise the film would be set nearly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and roughly a century before House of the Dragon. Casting details production timelines and release plans have yet to be announced.

The idea of expanding the saga onto the big screen has circulated for years. Original Game of Thrones showrunners once floated the possibility of concluding the series with feature films but HBO ultimately chose to complete the story on television.

Despite industry discussions surrounding Warner Bros. and potential corporate restructuring the studio appears committed to growing the Westeros franchise. With House of the Dragon preparing for its third season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms also progressing the fantasy universe continues to expand across formats. Reports have additionally hinted at animated projects set in the same world further signaling long term investment in the franchise.

If greenlit into full production Aegon’s Conquest could deliver one of the most ambitious dragon led epics yet bringing the foundation of the Seven Kingdoms to cinema audiences worldwide.
