Delhi Capitals Criticised for Team Selection as RCB Cruise After Batting Collapse

Date:

Delhi Capitals faced heavy criticism following a dramatic batting failure against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, where they were bowled out for just 76 runs in a one-sided IPL 2026 clash. The match, held at Arun Jaitley Stadium, saw the visitors chase down the modest target in only 6.3 overs, sealing a dominant nine-wicket victory.

The collapse began early as pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Josh Hazlewood exploited swing and bounce conditions to dismantle Delhi’s top order. The home side slumped to 8 for 6 within the powerplay, leaving no room for recovery and resulting in one of their lowest totals this season.

After the loss, former India cricketer Irfan Pathan questioned the team management’s decision to leave out Prithvi Shaw and Abhishek Porel from the playing XI. He expressed concern over the strategy, especially given the team’s ongoing struggles, having now lost three consecutive matches.

Delhi had opted to continue with Pathum Nissanka as an opener alongside KL Rahul. Although Nissanka showed promise with quick starts earlier in the tournament, he failed to deliver substantial scores, accumulating only 147 runs across seven matches.

Instead of bringing in Shaw or Porel, the team handed a debut to young talent Sahil Parakh. However, the decision backfired as Parakh was dismissed on just his second delivery, further intensifying scrutiny over the selection choices made by the management led by director Venugopal Rao.

Interestingly, Porel was later introduced as an Impact Substitute and emerged as Delhi’s top scorer with 30 runs. He also built a brief partnership with David Miller, but the effort was insufficient to challenge Bengaluru’s easy chase.

The defeat has pushed Delhi Capitals into the lower half of the standings, raising serious questions about their team balance and tactical decisions as the tournament progresses.
